Just two weeks after millions of people, all across the world, marched in solidarity to support women’s rights and equality for all, Pennsylvania’s Republican legislators push a bill that would diminish a woman’s right to choose.
Senate Bill 3, is being fast tracked through the legislature with no public hearings scheduled. A vote could come up as early as Monday in the Judiciary Committee. Both Senators Gordner and Yaw sit on this committee. We must inundate their offices over the weekend with messages and emails opposing this legislation.
The bill, which mirrors previously proposed legislation defeated in prior sessions, would ban abortions after 20 weeks (current law is 24 weeks) and sharply curtail a procedure (dilation and evacuation) used in 2nd trimester pregnancies.
The Pennsylvania Medical Society is on the record opposing such legislation, stating “We are highly concerned that the bill sets a dangerous precedent by legislating specific treatment protocols.
Please call your Senator (contact info below) to reinforce your opposition to SB 3. Tell them:
- I want to ensure a woman can consult with her doctor and family on making the right decision;
- I don’t want the legislature making the choice for a woman and her family;
- I believe big government should never come between a woman and her body or a woman and her doctor;
- government should not determine medical protocol – that should be determined by medical experts on a case-by-case basis;
- science and medicine should be used to determine best practices for medical procedures, not politicians or bureaucrats;
- PA Health Department records show only 1% of abortions in 2015 occurred after 20th gestational week.
Your call will make a difference. If you are interested in organizing a rally outside your senator’s office, please contact SVP.
