Wild Goose Farm will be hosting Beyond Recyling: Building Sustainable Solutions June 16th & 17th, 2017 with support from an Environmental Education Grant from the Department of Environmental Protection.
This weekend in June is an opportunity for us to take simple encouraging steps together towards building a more regenerative and sustainable world.
We are organizing the first day around two tracks. Those interested in hands on activities include building prototypes of simple affordable things people can use in their homes to become more resilient and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These include simple drip irrigation systems, building swales on contour, a solar dehydrator, worm bins, and low tunnels for season extension. Additional sessions include microgreens, nutrient dense probiotic food (kombucha, yogurt, sourdough, cheese), herbal self-care and first aid, upcycling and mushroom propagation. Those more interested in the creative arts, will be working with theater and art folks on creating art pieces as vehicles in which to share sustainable solutions to the wider public. If you have something you’d like to share, let us know. In the evening there will be time to relax, enjoy each other’s company and join in a sing a long. At the end of the second day (from 2-5pm) we’ll invite the larger community to join us where we will demonstrate what we have learned together.
Joining us will be Rusty Orner, of Quiet Creek Herb Farm, who is nationally recognized for leadership in sustainable agriculture. He will work on the construction of a solar dehydrator. Johnny Tewksbury, of Tewksbury Grace Farm, will demonstrate drip irrigation methods and using low tunnels to extend the growing season. Wild Goose Farm members will organize the completion of a passive-solar microshelter.
On site we’ll have rustic accommodations and room for tents, or small campers. Just down the road are B and B and hotel alternatives. Thanks to a grant from PA Department of Environmental Protection we have some funding to help cover some of the costs for this weekend. We are asking participants to contribute $10 a day for registration, $10 for each deliciously prepared meal and $10 per night for onsite camping. If you register for the whole weekend event (2 days registration, 6 meals and 3 nights lodging), the cost is discounted to $75 and reduced even more if you become a member. Free for kids under 18, presenters and Wild Goose Farm Members. Scholarships and work exchange are available, upon request and availability. If you’d like to register, fill out this form and send your food and lodging payment through paypal or by sending a check. The form and payment is due by June 9th, 2017.
All ages are welcome. Millennials encouraged. Childcare may be possible with advanced notice.
On the afternoon of the second day, Saturday, June 17th from 2-5pm, we will host Building Sustainable Solutions Community Demonstration to showcase to the larger community what was learned during the the weekend.
If you can’t make it but would like to contribute to making this and other future events possible, donations are gladly accepted and much appreciated.
