Perspectives on Gas Shale Development
January 13, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Carl Kirby, professor of geology at Bucknell, will discuss numerous issues related to natural gas development from tight shales such as the Marcellus.
In the resource-rich state of Pennsylvania, this new industrial-scale development is made possible by the combination of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, but producing gas involves many other steps. Kirby will explore claims made by industry supporters and environmentalists to determine what the potential and actual environmental issues are.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m.; beverages and a light dessert will be provided. Participants may bring their own lunch or purchase a soup-and-sandwich lunch (vegetable soup, ham salad on a croissant, assorted cookies and chocolate cake with icing) for $6 by contacting the Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning office at 570-522-0105 or [email protected] up to noon of the day prior to the program; payment can be made at the door.
The Bucknell Institute for Lifelong Learning has provided adult learners in the Central Susquehanna Valley a broad range of educational and intellectual opportunities since its inauguration during the fall of 2009. The Institute is a self-supporting affiliate of Bucknell University. All of its programs and events are supported by membership and course registration fees and donations from members and friends.
